That’s one big recipe title today, and that’s because we’re making an American dish, and everything is big over there right? I only encountered country fried steak on my last trip to America despite having gone there so many times. And it’s a really tasty dish, I don’t claim to know how they make it over there but i’ve guessed and my result it pretty darn close to what I had over there!

What ingredients do I need?

The following ingredients will serve 2 people:

For the homestyle fries
1 red potato
1 knob of butter
3 tablespoons of cooking oil
Salt & pepper
Paprika

For the country fried steak

2 flat rump steaks
1 egg
3/4 cup of whole milk
3/4 cup of flour
Paprika
Mild chilli powder
Salt & pepper
Cooking oil

For the gravy

Great i’ve got those ingredients what do I need to do?

We’ll start with those potatoes, cube potatoes with skin on. Then place them in a saucepan and add enough water to cover, then add high heat, when the water begins to boil strain and remove.

Add oil and butter to a skillet, when the the butter starts to bubble add the potatoes to the skillet. Leave for 4-5 minutes without stirring on a medium high heat before flipping. Once all sides are done add salt, pepper and paprika, stir and keep frying for another 2 minutes. Once done place on a baking tray and place in the oven at the lowest heat, this will crisp them further and keep them hot while we work on the steak!

Bring out two mixing bowls place the egg and milk in one bowl, and the flour, salt, pepper, mild chilli powder and paprika, and mix both separately.

We’re then going to cover the steak in flour mixture from that bowl, then we’re going to dunk it and cover it in the egg mixture, before placing it back in the flour mixture again. Once the whole steak is white, leave it there while we heat up the skillet, put a generous amount of cooking oil on the skillet and put it on a high heat.

After several minutes the heat of the skillet should be hot enough to put your steak on (you can test this by putting a small amount of flour on the skillet and see if it fizzes, if it does it’s hot enough!). Once on the pan don’t move for 3-4 minutes and then flip and cook the other side for just as long.

Once done transfer to the baking tin the potatoes are on and place in the oven.

Now for the gravy the quick and easy part, fill a bowl with the flour, salt and pepper, and then pour the grease and fat from the pan into it. Then add the milk, if it’s runny keep adding more flour until it’s the constancy you want for your gravy. Make sure you are generous with the pepper in the gravy!

And that’s it we’re ready to serve!
